A Washington, D.C., based group is demanding Albia and Monroe County, Iowa drop any connection to the privately organized and funded veterans' park in Albia and pay back any public money given in support of the monument. The Welcome Home Soldier monument has received $11,413 from the local hotel-motel tax. Americans United for Separation of Church and State has given the Monroe County and the City of Albia 30 days to respond to their letter. The crosses are very much like those at Arlington National Cemetery. Monroe County Attorney John Pabst, a former Army lawyer, said that he believes laws exist authorizing funds for veterans' parks.
