A new medical waiver policy instituted in the wake of the death of Senior Chief Petty Officer Shannon Kent allows for appeals to the recommendations process and permits a second medical waiver review. Should a second medical waiver review be requested, a Navy medical professional will look at a candidate's ability to enlist or commission, even though a disqualifying condition may exist, as outlined in the "Medical Standards for Appointment, Enlistment, or Induction into the Military Services."
