Kit Up Knife Look: The Microtech OSS Cobra

When I was a BUD/S student and one of the lucky twenty three originals out of 220 to graduate with class 215, tradition dictated that the class buy our phase proctor a gift.  A phase proctor basically acts as a phase mentor to the class and keeps you out of trouble and HAMMERS the class when we needed a tune up.  In my case, our third phase proctor was a maniac (and I mean that in a good way) named Instructor Ryan.  Like me, he was a knife hound, and silently made his wish known for a good auto folder. One of my classmates was a good fu**er named Todd Dolgoff, he was a former Recon Marine and physically breezed through BUD/S at 33 (a total animal).  Dolgoff first brought the Microtech brand to my attention, and it was Todd that recommended that we chip in and buy Ryan a bad ass auto by Microtech.  I don't remember which knife we bought him, but I do remember holding it briefly and noticing the fine craftsmanship.

I remember being on the grinder for PT at 0500, I was at the end of BUD/S training and only days from final graduation.  The moist February wind was blowing cold off of the Pacific and inviting itself to our morning PT, attempting to mock us with its chill.  Of course, we silently laughed back, immune to its misery at this point. We started out the PT with Ryan running us through the paces, then push up 700 or so, as we were rocking out to Sabbath and War Pigs on the stereo, Ryan took a pause and popped open his new auto with a, "Watch your eyes gents! Thanks for my new blade".  The class responded with a Hooyah that could have been heard 30 miles away; I'm sure woke a few Coronado guests at the Hotel Del.  I'll remember that scene for the rest of my life.

I'm looking forward to visiting Microtech at SHOT and seeing if I can get my hands on a few blades to review for you guys (let me know if anything strikes your interest via the Fireteam page).

Above is a look at their latest, the OSS Cobra.
