Kit Up!

SOCOM Looking for New Flashbang

The specs are shielded under a password protected section of the Fed Biz Opps site, but it looks as if SOCOM is looking for an improved flash bang to replace its current M-84 and whatever other Ninja grenades it's got in the kitbag.

It's unclear how SOCOM wants to improve the current flashbang, which it says:

"...are diversionary devices that provide a tactical advantage by temporarily creating psychological and physiological conditions designed to incapacitate personnel while minimizing fatalities, permanent injury to personnel, and undesired damage to property and the environment. These devices may generate an instantaneous combination of sound, light, and/or pressure that distracts or diverts the subject by temporarily causing confusion or disorientation."

One has to assume that the "sources sought" notice asks for technologies that mitigate collateral property or bodily damage. It reminds me of the so-called FOG grenade that the Asymmetric Warfare Group has been working on that provides near instantaneous obscurant with little ignite time. Maybe SOCOM wants a faster flash and bang that can possibly be directionalized so that the operators don't have to wait as long for it to detonate before entering a room.

If anyone has any gouge on this, we'd like to hear it -- no fingerprints.

The sources sought notice says there's an industry day to present current improvement technologies 25 and 26 May in Bloomington, Indiana.
