This short video of British troops on jungle patrol in Malaya in the 1950s, via counterinsurgency expert David Ucko over at the Kings of War blog, is really good stuff. The mid-patrol brew is classic. Also, the timelessness of the patrol itself: beating the bush in search of the "bandits," the really long (15 months) combat tours and the troops returning to the security of the FOB after the patrol. The more things change, the more they remain the same.
