From Service to Civilian Success

Leaving the military doesn’t mean leaving behind your skills. Veterans bring leadership, discipline, and adaptability that employers want, but translating that experience into a civilian career can be tough.

Fortunately, a growing number of companies are stepping up with free training, mentorship, and dedicated hiring pipelines for transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses. Here are 11 programs making that move easier.

OpenAI: Free ChatGPT Plus for Veterans

OpenAI is helping veterans access cutting-edge AI tools through a one-year free subscription to ChatGPT Plus, part of a new veterans initiative announced in November 2025.

The offer gives transitioning service members and veterans access to premium AI features for research, resume building, and job-search support, helping them use AI to improve writing, interviews, and productivity.

Amazon: From Uniform to Career Uniform

Amazon is one of the largest veteran employers in the U.S., with over 40,000 veterans and spouses already on staff. Its Military Fellowship Program helps service members in their last 180 days of duty gain real-world corporate experience before discharge.

Through SkillBridge and the Military Ambassador Program, participants receive on-the-job training, resume help, and mentorship that often leads to full-time jobs. Amazon has pledged to hire 100,000 veterans and spouses by 2026.

Microsoft: Turning Mission Experience into Tech Expertise

Microsoft’s Software and Systems Academy (MSSA) offers a 17-week course in cloud computing, cybersecurity, and IT administration, free for veterans and transitioning service members.

Graduates are guaranteed interviews at Microsoft or its hiring partners. It’s one of the strongest tech pathways for veterans entering the civilian workforce.

Hiring Our Heroes: Building Civilian Connections

Run by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Hiring Our Heroes connects veterans and military spouses to employers through career fairs, workshops, and a 12-week Corporate Fellowship Program that provides real-world experience before hire.
