Weekend wrap: Expeditionary links


Yet another sweltering summer week comes to a close in the National Capital Region -- here are just a few of the things we didn't get a chance to write about.

• In case you missed it, on Tuesday President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Petry, an Army Ranger who was badly wounded while saving his soldiers' lives while fighting in Afghanistan. You can check out Petry's official citation here.

• Despite all the endless talk about potential budget cutbacks for conventional weapons programs, blogger Benjamin Loehrke points out that spending on nuclear weapons and other systems is about to skyrocket.

• The U.K.'s defence secretary has said categorically that the Royal Air Force will not be merged with Great Britain's other armed services, as some have suggested.

• The Army is honoring the heroism of logisticians awarded the Medal of Honor in World War II and afterwards.

• Time Magazine and the Center for a New American Security posted the first episode in their new video-chat series.

• Would you like to book former Secretary Gates to talk at your event? You can! He is now represented by Washington Speakers Bureau. Key question: Now that he's getting big fees for his appearances, will he continue to make a joke in every speech about how much he hates Washington?
