Weekend wrap: Expeditionary links

It's the close of an incredibly hot and unpleasant week here in the National Capital Region -- here are a few stories that we didn't get a chance to write about:

• Maine Sen. Susan Collins says she thinks Defense Secretary Panetta will be an ally for her state's biggest employer, the Bath Iron Works shipyard that builds Navy destroyers.

• Two of the top pros in the Washington defense game, Mackenzie Eaglen of the Heritage Foundation and Gordon Adams of American University, went on the PBS News Hour this week to talk about the coming era of of the Panettagon (That neologism coined just now, right here). Mark Thompson of Time called their segment a "clash of the titans."

• The full and complete Pentagon Papers finally are set to be declassified on Monday, report Jason Ukman and Greg Jaffe of the WaPo.

• Now we know what Secretary Gates thinks of NATO, but at least somebody still seems to like it -- at DefenseTech John pointed out that Russia is joining a NATO exercise this year for the first time.

• Panhandle wildlife and beach-goers beware: Later this month, Eglin AFB, Fla., could get its first F-35.
