With grocery bills rising every day and the news projecting the prices going up another 2-4% this year, how is a military family supposed to make the most of their grocery budget?
We all know the commissary can get you more bang for your buck, but sometimes it's just easier to hit your local grocery store to get needed items. So where do you go if you need another alternative? The good news is that there are actually national chains that appreciate military sacrifices so much that they offer special discounts just for you.
All three "big box warehouse" stores offer some nice discounts and benefits and are conveniently placed across the U.S. You can even score special sign up bonuses or coupons when becoming members. Check out the breakdown for each warehouse below:
Military personnel, both active and veteran, may enroll in-Club for a reduced Membership fee. Active military ID, "Veteran" designation on state-issued ID or other proof of service is required to get the discount. Military Memberships have the same features and benefits as an Inner Circle Membership. The normal Inner Circle Membership is $50 but after the military discount you are a member for only $35 and you get two membership cards. Plus if you are a coupon clipper, you can use manufacturer coupons at BJ's for even more savings!
Join or renew a Sam's club membership and get a $15 gift card. This offer is valid for active, retired, and civilian military employees and their spouses. The cost for a membership is $45 so after the gift card you are only paying $30 for an entire year.
Costco offers new military members over $50 in savings when they join. Since memberships to Costco only cost $55 for families, you are basically getting a membership for only $5 after the coupons you'll receive as a military member. This offer is available for all members of the United States Armed Forces, veterans, and their families.
There are also some regional grocery stores and national pharmacies that offer military discounts, including the following:
Earth Fare, a supermarket that sells organic and natural food, will give military members 10% every day of the week.
Farm Fresh supermarkets offer a 10% military discount every day on store-brand merchandise with a valid military ID.
Active duty military, veterans, National Guard and Reserve, and their families can save 20% every time you shop online at CVS.com and in store at your local CVS/pharmacy when you become a Veterans Advantage member. You'll also receive free shipping on your online orders.
And don’t forget, just because a store doesn’t advertise a military discount, it doesn’t mean they don’t offer one. So always carry your military ID with you and ask for a military discount wherever you go.
