GRAND CHALLENGE BREAKS DOWN

It now looks like all of the robot racers in Darpa's Grand Challenge have broken down in the Mojave Desert.The "variety of problems included stuck brakes, broken axles, rollovers and malfunctioning satellite navigation equipment," reports the Elko Daily Press. "One six-wheeled robot built by a Louisiana team was disqualified after it became entangled in barbed wire."All this was to be expected. Half of the bots couldn't make it through the mile-or-so obstacle course, meant to separate out the sturdy drones from the weak.
