Usually, when the national news magazines start talking defense technology, you can expect breathless accounts of gadgets that'll be ready to go any second now.
So it's refreshing to read this report from Time magazine, which keeps the hi-tech slobber in check, for the most part.
The story examines the likely next advances in defending our ports and airports from terrorist attacks, and shows some of the research being done to counter a possible biological attack. Of course, there are the usual cliches -- "in a world of ancient hatreds, modern shields still have their uses" -- but it's an improvement over the standard-issue hype.
