An Army paratrooper died Monday at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, while conducting airborne training operations, officials say.
Little information was released about the paratrooper, assigned to the base's elite 82nd Airborne Division.
"Additional information will be released 24 hours after next of kin notification," officials said in a brief announcement. "The incident is currently under investigation."
A Fort Bragg spokesman, Lt. Col. Mike Burns, told Military.com the fatal accident took place before 1 p.m., although the precise timeline was unclear.
While it's not clear how the soldier died, the tragedy underscores the danger inherent in the work of Army paratroopers, even in training.
In January 2020, a Green Beret, Master Sgt. Nathan Goodman, was killed in a free-fall training exercise near Eloy, Arizona.
In September of the same year, an 82nd Airborne paratrooper, Pfc. Jean Cruz De Leon, died in an accident while training at Fort Stewart, Georgia. His parachute had malfunctioned during a static-line jump, officials said.
