The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced they will be conducting a long-term study of the effects of the COVID-19 virus on veterans across the country.
The voluntary study, which will last four years, will involve veterans infected with COVID-19, those who have recovered as well as those who may be at risk but have not been infected by the virus, according to a VA release.
Volunteers will be sought from residents in VA's Community Living Centers as well as inpatients and outpatients at other VA health facilities nationwide, they said. Those who fit the testing profile will be asked to provide specimens from throat swabs or blood draws.
Researches plan to study the data of thousands of veterans enrolled in the testing program and compare it to results of other studies, notably a similar study being run by the Department of Defense on active duty members. That information, they said, could contribute to the development of a cure or effective treatment program for the virus.
"By analyzing data on COVID-19 risk factors, progression, outcomes and immunity, this VA research promises to significantly advance the fight against the disease," said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie.
