The U.S. Coast Guard Station Block Island has closed for the season.

The Coast Guard says the unit closed on Wednesday. It will reopen next Memorial Day weekend for the summer of 2017.

The station closes for the winter because of reduced boating traffic.

Station Point Judith will take over for all responses in the area. It is located about 12 miles north of Block Island.

The Coast Guard says Station Point Judith provides search and rescue assets for Rhode Island Sound, Block Island Sound and offshore emergencies up to 50 miles south of Rhode Island.
