NORFOLK, Va. — Military prosecutors in Virginia say they've charged a U.S. Navy sailor with raping and attempting to a kill a fellow female sailor.

The Virginian-Pilot newspaper reports that Seaman Recruit Xavier Johnson allegedly held a pillow over the woman's face, choked her and banged her head against a floor. Authorities say Johnson then sexually assaulted the woman while she was unconscious.

Johnson is assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush. He was arraigned in a military court Monday. He did not enter a plea and is being held at the Naval Consolidated Brig in Chesapeake.

The alleged crimes occurred in Portsmouth in September. Johnson also is charged with assaulting a civilian woman in Norfolk in April.

Johnson joined the Navy in January 2015.
