MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A Marine Corps veteran and his girlfriend have both been sentenced to life in prison for killing the veteran's wife three years ago.
News outlets report that 26-year-old Marquis Cheatham and 24-year-old Dominique Atkinson were sentenced Thursday after having pleaded guilty last month to the April 2013 slaying of Cheatham's 20-year-old wife Ashley McCarthy.
Authorities said Cheatham and Atkinson forced McCarthy into the trunk of a car after McCarthy and her husband got into an argument in Montgomery.
Atkinson testified that McCarthy escaped from the trunk, but Cheatham chased her down and fatally shot her, leaving her body on the steps of a resident's home.
Cheatham was a lance corporal stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina at the time of the homicide. Atkinson also lived in North Carolina.
