AURORA, Colo. — Buckley Air Force Base officials have announced plans to acquire land surrounding the base in Aurora to prevent future encroachment of development.
The Denver Post reports that officials said Wednesday they're purchasing the first surrounding property, a 124-acre area. In all, more than 1,000 acres will be acquired by the Trust for Public Land to serve as a permanent buffer zone around the base.
Plans for the additional land include adding trails and open space for residents that connect to area parks.
Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan has voiced support for Buckley's land acquisition project.
The Air Force base brings nearly a billion dollars into the city each year.
