Navy Touts 12-Month Grad Program to Bolster Cyber Skills

The Navy is searching for sailors to take part in a 12-month graduate program designed to meet the Defense Department's growing need for trained cyber professionals.

Sailors E-6 and above who have information systems technician and cryptologic technician networks ratings can apply for a chance to earn a master of science in applied cyber operations, a Navy statement said.

Applicants must hold a bachelor of science degree in technical fields such as computer science, electrical engineering, or information and engineering technology.

A conditional letter of acceptance must be applied for and received by March 14. Selected students will begin classes either this September or March 2017 at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterrey, Calif., the statement said.

"[The curriculum] covers a focused set of cyber topics suited for the technical enlisted workforce by providing graduates with a rigorous foundation in cyber security necessary for defensive and offensive cyber operations," NPS says in a program description on its website.

Classroom instruction is complemented with laboratory exercises, workshops, site visits, guest speakers and seminars. Students must also complete a capstone project and a cyber exercise.

"The opportunity to come here and get some advanced training is a big deal for us," Thomas Skoff, a member of the program's inaugural class, said in a Navy statement before graduating in 2013. "We are an integral part of the development of the Navy's cyber warfare capability ... We will be leading junior sailors in the Navy's cyberwar efforts."
