Police car emergency lights.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- Police say a Rhode Island man on leave from the New York Air National Guard was killed in a one-car crash less than a mile from his North Kingstown home on Christmas Eve.

A news release confirmed the death of 22-year-old Joshua Zalabowski on Monday. Police say Zalabowski's vehicle swerved off the road and struck a tree on Dry Bridge Road, about a half-mile from his home on Vista Circle.

Police say the heavily damaged car was found on its roof in the middle of the road. Zalabowski was pronounced dead at the scene.

Weather and road conditions were poor, but police say no evidence suggested that another vehicle was involved.

Zalabowski completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. His rank was Airman First Class.
