The Kitsap Sun reports the Navy announced the change on Tuesday, saying it was concerned about moving sailors back and forth between the two bases.
The aircraft carrier arrived at the naval base in Bremerton on Jan. 13 for a long-term maintenance project.
The Nimitz will join the USS John C. Stennis. It will be the first time two nuclear-powered aircraft carriers have been homeported in Bremerton.
The 1,100-foot ship and its crew of nearly 3,000 have been regular visitors to Bremerton. Most families move back and forth with the ship. Those sailors who stayed in Everett because a spouse has a job or they don't want to pull kids out of school are faced with a two-hour commute each way.
