Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer Rescues 4 Near Cape Blanco, Oregon

CAPE BLANCO, ORE. — A Coast Guard rescue swimmer swam 1,750 yards through 57 degree water to rescue four fishermen near Cape Blanco, Oregon, on Tuesday.

The Coast Guard says Petty Officer 2nd Class Darren Harrity swam in 5-foot seas and 30 mph winds to rescue the men after their vessel grounded and started taking on water.

The 27-year-old native of Jupiter, Florida, swam each of the fishermen from their life raft to shore.

He was lowered into the water by a helicopter around 3 a.m. after the crew called for help from the Coast Guard.
