NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A federal grand jury in New Haven has indicted a 35-year-old Norwich man on charges he assaulted two guards at the Navy's submarine base in Groton earlier this month.
Gary Ray Brunache (broo-NAYSH') is accused of lunging at one of the Department of Defense police officers and stabbing one of them in the leg on November 13. Authorities say the officers fired three shots at Brunache, but none of the bullets hit him.
A message seeking comment was left Monday with his federal public defender.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service says Brunache told them that he walked from his home in Norwich to see his brother on the base in Groton, and attacked the officers after they denied him entry.
