SAN FRANCISCO -- A sailor suffering from chest pains aboard the HMCS Calgary, a 440-foot Canadian naval frigate transiting toward San Francisco for Fleet Week, was medically evacuated at approximately 10 p.m. Thursday night approximately 27 miles northwest of Monterey.

The Coast Guard command center in San Francisco received the request for medical assistance from the frigate. After evaluating the patient's condition and on-scene weather factors, the Coast Guard launched a helicopter from Air Station San Francisco. The patient and one medical technician were hoisted from the Calgary and transported to awaiting medical care in San Francisco.

"We strive to be both good shipmates and neighbors with our partners in the international community," said Capt. Greg Stump, commander of Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. "The Coast Guard has an outstanding operational relationship with the Royal Canadian Navy, and we look forward to interacting with them during Fleet Week."

The Calgary is visiting the San Francisco Bay Area and will participate in the parade of ships Friday and will be available for tours.
