Coast Guard Station Scituate Closes for Season

BOSTON - The seasonal Coast Guard Station Scituate, located in Scituate, Massachusetts, closed Sept. 8 and will re-open on Memorial Day 2015.

With Station Situate closed for the year, the crews return to Station Point Allerton in Hull, Massachusetts, their home duty station.

Most cases in the area of Scituate occur between the months of May and September, thus the need for a temporary station.

Coast Guard Station Scituate was established in 1936. At its peak staffing, it accommodated a crew of about 40 and operated a combination of up to three standard and non-standard boats. Today, the station is staffed with a two ready crews using either a 45-foot response boat medium or a 25-foot response boat small.

"This year we had 550 recreational safety boardings, 35 search-and-rescue cases, assisted 13 lives, and saved 15," said Petty Officer 1st Class Ben Foster, the operations petty officer at Station Scituate. "It was a busy season, and we're already looking ahead to next year."
