CLEVELAND — A Coast Guardsman accused of assault and other charges of the Uniform Code of Military Justice was sentenced to reduction in pay grade to E-5, restriction to Sector Lake Michigan for two months, forfeiture of $2,063 per month for one month, and a reprimand after pleading guilty Feb. 18 during a summary court-martial at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan, in Milwaukee.
Petty Officer 1st Class Jack A. Haltom was convicted of Article 128 of the UCMJ for assaulting another Coast Guard member. A charge and specification for violating Article 120 of the UCMJ was withdrawn pursuant to a pre-trial agreement.
In addition to the assault, Haltom was convicted of Article 107 for making false official statements during the Coast Guard Investigative Service investigation, and Article 134 for conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline or of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces.
Haltom is undergoing proceedings for an other-than-honorable discharge as part of the pre-trial agreement.
Rear Adm. Fred Midgette, commander of the Coast Guard 9th District, was the special court-martial convening authority.
Haltom was assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw, homeported in Cheboygan, Mich., at the time of the investigation. He was moved to Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan following the investigation.
