PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A Coast Guardsman was convicted and sentenced Saturday during a general court-martial at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Charleston, S.C.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Omar Gomez, 35, was sentenced to confinement of eight years, reduction to pay grade E-1, the lowest enlisted rank and a dishonorable discharge.
Gomez was convicted of all charges including seven specifications of Article 120 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for engaging in a broad spectrum of sexual misconduct ranging from the rape of one civilian woman to other unlawful acts involving six Coast Guard women.
Gomez was also convicted of:
•Article 92 – Failure to obey a lawful order and regulation
•Article 93 – Cruelty and Maltreatment
•Article 107 – False official statement
•Article 134 – General Articles (offenses not specifically covered in any other article of the UCMJ)
The crimes occurred between August 2011 and September 2012 while Gomez was assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Gallatin. Locations of the crimes include aboard the Gallatin, Honduras, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Charleston.
Vice. Adm. Robert C. Parker, commander of the Coast Guard Atlantic Area, was the court-martial convening authority.
Gomez was administratively assigned to another unit in South Carolina while awaiting court-martial.
