MIAMI— Coast Guard crews rescued a missing pilot of a downed Piper Cherokee single engine aircraft in the vicinity of Everglades National Park Monday.
Rescued was Daniel Lawrence.
Search-and-rescue coordinators at the Coast Guard 7th District command center in Miami received the report of the downed aircraft at about 8:30 a.m. Monday from Miami Missions Air Traffic Control Center. Reports to the Coast Guard indicated the aircraft had dropped off the radar with one pilot aboard.
Lawrence reportedly departed Marathon Airport in Marathon, Fla., Monday and was en route to Sarasota Airport in Sarasota, Fla., when he started to feel a vibration in the engine before the plane began to lose power. Lawrence performed an emergency landing in the vicinity of Everglades National Park.
Immediately upon notification, the Coast Guard launched an Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew, from Air Station Miami.
The rescue crew arrived on scene and located the downed aircraft and the pilot standing on the wing. Lawrence was safely hoisted and transferred to Coast Guard Air Station Miami where his medical condition was listed as stable.
