Coast Guard Medevacs Navy Sailor

ASTORIA, Ore. — The U.S. Coast Guard medically evacuated an injured Navy sailor approximately 75 miles west of Coos Bay, Ore., Tuesday.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station North Bend, Ore., transported the injured sailor to Eugene, Ore., where he was placed in the care of Lane County, Ore., Fire and Rescue, then taken to Sacred Heart General Hospital in Eugene.

Coast Guard Sector North Bend watchstanders received a call from the 510-foot, Everett, Wash.-based USS Momsen at approximately 1:54 p.m., indicating a 23-year-old male crewmember had severed part of a finger after it was reportedly closed in a water-tight door.

Sector North Bend launched the Dolphin aircrew that arrived on scene at approximately 3:43 p.m. The crew lowered a rescue swimmer and basket, then hoisted the injured sailor before transporting him to Eugene. He was transferred to EMS just after 5 p.m.
