Nothing like bringing a piece of PIE to friends. That’s what members of Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago brought and shared with students and administrators at Goodwin Elementary School in Cicero, Ill. earlier this week when the unit extended its Partnership in Education program, Oct. 15, 2012.
The signed memorandum of agreement confirms and promotes the MSU’s participation in a variety of educational activities at the school including reading to students, tutoring, guest speaking and providing career awareness and job shadowing. In addition, students are offered the opportunities to tour local Coast Guard units.
Located in a high-risk neighborhood about 12 miles northeast of the MSU, and just east of the Chicago city limits, Goodwin Elementary has a need for volunteers and mentors to guide at-risk students in academic and fitness programs.
“We’re excited to renew and expand our partnership with Goodwin Elementary School,” said Cmdr. Jason Neubauer, MSU Chicago’s commanding officer.
“Our crewmembers thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to interact with students in the classroom, while also reinforcing the Coast Guard’s primary missions, such as water and boating safety.”
Throughout the year, crew members at MSU can sign up to volunteer to spend time at the school reading and mentoring.
Lt. j.g. Furyisa Miller, the unit’s PIE program coordinator, and a group of Goodwin students were also present for the signing.
