The unemployment rate for veterans in 2014 was 5.3 percent, down from 6.6 percent in the year before and below the 6 percent rate for civilians, according to Labor Department figures released Wednesday. But younger veterans who served after Sept. 11, 2001, have had a more difficult time. That group had an unemployment rate of 7.2 percent last year.
