LAPD Metro SWAT Officer, Element Team Leader and USMC SGTMAJ Robert J. Cottle, was Killed In Action by a roadside bomb in Helmand Province, Afghanistan on March 24, 2010. He was the first LAPD officer killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. RJ joined the Marines at the age of 19 and in 1990 joined the LAPD, where he worked billets including Hollywood Vice, Southeast Area, LAPD Dive Team and SWAT. In the USMC (R) Cottle was assigned to the 4TH LAR (Light Armored Reconnaissance) Battalion, 4thMarine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, based out of Camp Pendleton, California.
