BRITS: PAPERS, PUPILS, PLEASE The British government is exploring whether to establish a national identity card -- complete with biometric information, like a fingerprint or iris scan.Privacy advocates have long been spooked by such cards, calling them "internal passports." Backing up such a document with a nationwide biometric database makes the prospect even more fearsome. The 10-year program is slated to cost 1.5 billion.
