SARASOTA, Fla. — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a family last seen in a 29-foot sailboat off the coast of southwest Florida in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Coast Guard said in a news release that the man left Sarasota early Sunday with his sons, ages 13 and 15, and his 17-year-old daughter. They were heading to Fort Myers to have repairs done on the sailboat.
Officials say the man called his brother Sunday afternoon and told him the sailboat was in 6-foot seas off the coast of Englewood, which is between Sarasota and Fort Myers.
A concerned relative called the Coast Guard on Tuesday. They launched air and boat crews to search for the family and are conducting a first light search Wednesday.
The Coast Guard is also asking mariners to keep a lookout for the sailboat.
