NY Air Guard Unit to Start Daily Drone Training Flights

SYRACUSE, N.Y.  — An Air National Guard unit will begin daily military drone flights from its central New York base this week.

National Guard officials say the 174th Attack Wing will start conducting daily MQ-9 training flights Wednesday from Hancock Field Air National Guard Base and Syracuse Hancock International Airport.

The first launch and recovery of the Reaper remotely piloted aircraft occurred at the base and airport last December. Officials say the plans to start daily flights soon afterward were delayed as the 174th worked with local air traffic control on an operating agreement.

All previous drone flights by the attack wing had been conducted at Wheeler Sack Army Airfield at Fort Drum in northern New York.

The 174th swapped its fighter jets for drones a few years ago.
