BAGHDAD — Iraqi military officials say an Islamic State suicide bomber has killed two army generals as they led forces against IS positions in turbulent Anbar province west of Baghdad.

They say the bomber drove his explosives-laden vehicle into advancing troops north of Anbar's provincial capital, IS-held Ramadi on Thursday.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

A military statement identified the two generals as Maj. Gen. Abdul-Rahman Abu-Regheef, deputy chief of operations in Anbar, and Brig. Gen. Sefeen Abdul-Maguid, commander of the 10th Army Division. It said there were other casualties.

Government forces and allied militiamen have been battling IS militants in Anbar for months but have made modest gains against the group that controls most of the province.
