As the Senate's gas tank approached empty for the summer, Wednesday's achievements were rather incremental.

The Senate approved the nominations of the next members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff -- Gen. Mark A. Milley to be Chief of Staff of the Army, Adm. John M. Richardson to be Chief of Naval Operations, and Lt. Gen. Robert B. Neller to be general and Commandant of the Marine Corps.

"Each is a proven leader with decades of operational experience," Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said in a statement released Thursday afternoon. "Our nation is stronger for their service, and the president and I will continue to benefit from their extensive expertise and strategic counsel in their new roles."

The Senate also approved ambassadors to Nicaragua, Norway and the Kyrgyz Republic, and anointed Sept. 25 as National Lobster Day.
