NORFOLK, Va. -- A formerU.S. Coast Guardofficer was sentenced to 21 months in prison June d19 after pleading guilty in December to receiving kickbacks from government contractors.
A judge also ordered Danielle Daniese Ferreira, 36, of Alexandria, to pay more than $98,000 in restitution to the U.S. Treasury, according to a U.S. Attorney's Office news release said.
According to court documents, the former Coast Guard lieutenant was responsible for "recommending contractors for maintenance and repairs on board Coast Guard cutters stationed on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts."
Ferreira recommended five procurement requests for ship repairs to a small company that had no experience doing that type of work. The company was owned by Ferreira's cousin.
Payment for the job went into two business accounts owned by Ferreira and her spouse, the court document said. Ferreira also received $15,000 from another contractor after adding the money to the company's final payment, according to court records.
