When the crew members saw the Coast Guard approaching, they panicked and threw their cocaine overboard.
The 32-foot boat swerved in the water, trying to get away from the 210-foot Miami-based Coast Guard Cutter Valiant as they tossed bail after bail into the Caribbean Sea, the Coast Guard announced Thursday.
A Coast Guard helicopter flew out to the boat and fired harmless shots near the boat, warning the crew to stop or else. They didn't, so the helicopter shot out one of the boat's engines.
When all was said and done, the Coast Guard seized $32.5 million worth of cocaine -- 43 bales worth -- on May 31.
The five smuggling suspects were transferred to federal law enforcement officers.
