Sledge wrote "With the Old Breed on Peleliu" which was one of many books on the Pacific war. Wm. Manchester in "Goodbye Darkness" is another great account. Okinawa dragged on to 22 June,'45 with over 12,000 U.S. deaths/110,000 Japs. Huge civilian casualties. Many in my parents and grandparents generation were convinced that the war would go on to maybe 1947 as the plan was to invade the main islands with ghastly US casualties.
