Authorities said no one came forward to help when it looked like the men were readying to fight the lone, slightly built father until Wen Jones, a former Marine and father of two, walked by, leaving the beach with his wife and two young daughters. "It was not just a situation I could just walk past," said Jones. Jones, 43, said he asked the men to break it up. But instead, a man began throwing punches. As Jones struggled with the largest attacker, another one began hitting him on the back of the head, and a third jumped in and eventually knocked him unconscious. His orbital bone beneath his eye was fractured. The confrontation started on the beach earlier in the day, according to Juno Beach police. Witnesses told police the three men had been harassing a 14-year-old boy and his friends, making racial slurs, and kicking sand on them. Finally, the boy's father, Leroy Wright, told them they needed to leave the beach, and he said that's when they began threatening him."I see that these guys were not backing down, and I literally had to keep them at bay, and I looked up and here was Mr. Jones," said Wright. After Jones was beaten unconscious, the three men fled, but witnesses took down their license plate numbers, and police tracked them down.
