A good close-in support aircraft didn't need to be fast as much as accurate. Speed gave you less time to line up a target. The A1 Sky-Raider (Sandy, Spad or any appropriate name, was tops in it's class. After dropping it's load it could turn around, fly back, and hose the area down with 20mm cannon fire. Not bad considering it's age and it's Navy history.

USAF propaganda. If they had done the Army, they only had to show one aircraft....the Huey. Of course, I am prejudiced.
