The A-10 Warthog is an updated version of the Russian IL Sturmovik, which wreaked hell on German armor and troops, WWII. Over 36,000 were cranked out east of the Urals. Our army lobby wants Apache gunships to do the dirty work, not USAF craft.

To the comment about the A-10 "Thunderbolt II" being an updated version of the WWII Sturmovik, I have to say you're a little sketchy when you consider the original P-47 Thunderbolt.

The A-10 is the mainstays of their routine operations. I wouldn't do away with it, only improve and modify them.

I'm a Vietnam vet and today live only about 2 miles from the gunnery range for Moody AFB in south Georgia. The old Spad A1 was a wonderful aircraft for close air support and to support the pick up of downed pilots in hostile territory, but the A10 flying gun is a completely different game. When you hear that Gau go off it is like worlds biggest zipper and is dispensing a lot of hurt. Doing away with the A10 in anticipating the F35 as an adequate replacement is foolish. Sometimes technology and new just doesn't beat toughness and big weapons.

I don't understand why the Pentagon wants to get rid of this wonderful killing machine.

Every time I see another explosion I think of another Taliban raghead going to receive his 72 virgins and I hope they all look like Rosie and wonder what crawled up the Air Force to want to get rid of something that works like the A-10?

The Pentagon obviously want to replace this aircraft because the A-10s continued existance does not bring in money to congressional districts.
