I was a Grunt in I Core Viet Nan, D 3/21 196th LIB, 1970. Being on the ground, air power is essential for a quick and decisive resolution. The made the cobra for covering Huey's and it was fantastic. The new Osprey should have a comparable gun ship to accompany it. The need for a gunship that can cruse at the same speed and range is very important. A good example is the Chinook and the combat failure not to have a gunship with them. I would have loved to have the A-10 in Viet Nam and until the can make a better close combat gunship it would be a mistake to retire it. Jets are fine but they can not give the close combat support the A-10 can and waiting for helicopter gunship takes to long. Any raid to get a target or rescue attempt should have twice the number of gunships of any contention possible. Firepower saves our mens lives, use it!
