Not sure how this is somewhat humorous. That wasn't a failed landing. That was a hook point separation. Had the crew not ejected, it is very likely that the aircraft would have ended up in the water fully occupied. The loss of the weight of the crew and seats was probably enough for it to settle into ground effect and subsequently fly out. That was VA-42 during a CARQUAL. I know the crew quite well.
The flight crew didn't have time for anything but ejecting. The seats plus the crew was probably in the neighborhood of a ton of weight. Smart on their part. God bless Naval Aviation training .
