In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, one of the largest storms on record, devastated the islands of the Philippines. First to arrive on the scene, over 13,000 U.S. service members, including Strike Fighter Squadron TWO SEVEN and Carrier Air Wing FIVE, delivered relief supplies, searched for and rescued survivors, transported military and nongovernmental organization personnel and evacuated victims. Today, the United States Navy, Marine Corps and partner nations throughout the Asia-Pacific region continue to provide a combat-ready force to protect U.S. and allied interested abroad as well as an unparalleled capability for rapid response and humanitarian aid as exemplified during Operation Damayan (which means "to help each other").
