The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Balloon conducted a flight over Lake Burley Griffin on 23 January 2015 as the morning sun broke over Canberra. This event continued training in preparation for a busy year of community engagement tours around Australia. The Balloon is scheduled to visit several regional centres and schools to deliver an educational program to inspire and develop children's understanding of aviation and science. It will also conduct tethered flights where, weather permitting, members of the public experience firsthand the thrill of hot air ballooning. The RAAF owns two balloons which are based in Canberra and operated by Central Flying School. The balloons can launch from small open spaces, such as school ovals and often travel to regional or remote communities that don’t have an airport.
