Clean Rating: Safe for work.

Upon realizing the faux pas, the president jogged back down to shake hands with the Marine and spoke privately with him before entering the helicopter again.

What a disgrace. He made the mistake, knew it (or one of the pilots told him) and compounded it by NOT saluting. If he would've come back down those stairs, looked the marine in the eye and saluted him his point total would've went through the roof with me. What he did was worse than doing nothing at all....what a jerk.

The president should have gone back and snapped a salute to the Marine as a sign of respect. It always amazes me how the Commander in Chief of all US forces seems oblivious to proper customs and courtesies. Military courtesy conveys a respect not only by the subordinate, but by the senior individual as well. This really should be a briefing 101 to any newly elected president.

Some of you are so ignorant. Do you know how many times I have seen Marines, enlisted and officer alike, avoid saluting one another. Quit acting as if this is a war crime. Where were your negative comments when we had pres bush making a joke about not finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Where was the outrage when he removed our fighting men and women from Afghanistan where bin Laden was hiding to start an unnecessary war in Iraq? If you want to be outraged about something, be outraged about the 1,000s of dead Americans from the Iraq war...I guess it's OK to start an unnecessary war but heaven forbid if, being the leader of the free world, you forget to salute someone. Your blatant hate for the President is outshined only by your ignorance.

I just got out, 1971 to 2012 Army. Military Regulations; It is against military protocol for presidents to return salutes Salutes are not required when • Indoors, except when reporting to an officer or when on duty as a guard. • Addressing a prisoner. • Saluting is obviously inappropriate. In these cases, only greetings are exchanged. (Example: A person carrying articles with both hands, or being otherwise so occupied as to make saluting impracticable, is not required to salute a senior person or return the salute to a subordinate.) • Either the senior or the subordinate is wearing civilian clothes (a salute in this case is not inappropriate, but is not required.) • Officers of equal rank pass each other (a salute in this case is not inappropriate, but it is not required.)

He didn't forget. Some adviser told him to do that. In the first 2 years that he held office he returned a salute, maybe, one time in ten. Since then, he salutes when he wants to. He doesn't appreciate the meaning of such an honor.

Much respect for the President to realize the oversight. He is not perfect and is prone to mistakes just like the next man. When the world is against you everything you do right is not recognized and any oversight is worthy of national news. How would you feel in the same position? You may not like him but he is still our Commander In Chief whether you are willing to accept him or not and he deserves our respect.

  41. 30859857
    30859857 Jun 14, 2013

The priorities are interesting -- one President who was a whiz at saluting launches us into unnecessary wars that kill thousands of our own, tens of thousands of innocents elsewhere, strengthen our enemies in Iran and elsewhere, bankrupted our nation, and probably doom us to a century of desultory war, possibly leading to our decline as a world power as certainly as happened to others before us -- Athens, Rome, Byzantium, Spain, England, etc etc etc. . . but this man ("colored man," to be sure) forgets one salute and suddenly we're falling into outer darkness. . . interesting priorities indeed.

Number 1: The POTUS is NOT required to salute in this situation. Number 2: After the pilot mentioned the salute, Mr. Obama made it a point to correct himself, even though not required. Number 3: I would think that an apology and a handshake from the POTUS is much much more rewarding than a salute would be. Number 4: This Marine knows he will be saluted next time for sure. Number 5: No POTUS is perfect. They get up every single day, put their pants on, and go about their business just like everyone else. Number 6: Any POTUS has a million things on his mind from the time they get up until they go to sleep. If they actually do sleep. Number 7: Give Mr. Obama a break! I gave Mr. Bush a break for things I didn't like that he did. Number 8: Some of the comments on this post are just plain old mean, hateful, and disgusting. Number 9: My mother taught me that if you can't say something good about something, it might be best just to say nothing at all. Number 10: In our society, you will never, ever, find everyone satisfied or in agreement with everyone else. How about a little respect for the POTUS, even if you don't agree or didn't vote for him? He is human.

That is impressive, It takes real humility to do that and I hope the next person to take office has that same humility. (Good job Mr. P)

I believe he was distracted and didn't see him, and he went got up to talk to the pilots, he then saw him through the window and went back to salute or shake his hand, than he went back up. Believe me George W Bush missed a lot of salutes as well. wont mention he didn't salute at the base of Coffins coming home. He just stood there - So every one should know that Presidents are overwhelm and stressed out and they don't do it on purpose - being POTuS is not an easy job.

As a few have mentioned here, practice and procedures do not require the 'O's and POTUS to reply with a elbo-bend. Its just respect, acknowledgment, recognition of the presents rants with higher authority and not for the person in the suit. That Marine well knows that being a fact and he washed his hand asap.

Meh... I hate Obama as much as I hated Bush Jr., Clinton, Bush, etc, but this is not a big deal. 1) He's a civilian, always has been. 2) It was not a break in protocol or a violation of any rule. 3) It started with either Eisenhower or Nixon, and was just a choice, not a new standard. 4) He also might have just been distracted. 5) He went back and showed him respect, thats good enough, IMO.

  66. 32547199

  68. 32547199
    32547199 Jun 12, 2014

Just as the LA Baker said, it started with Eisenhower or Nixon. In addition, because these men did serve in the military, and thought it was respectful enough to salute back to those men and women who protect them as well as the people of this country. Personally, I think we need another General of the Army serving as President.

I can't believe the idiotic comments made by some of you about what the commander and chief of the armed forces should do with a subordinate marine. Salutes are to show respect for your superior officer not the other way around. What kind of moron would demand your superior officer to salute you? It not even presidential protocol to give salutes to the men in uniform. Reagen was the first president to start doing it. No other president has done it prior to that. Your lack of respect is the only reason why you would think that this president of the United States and commander and chief of the all the armed forces should cow tail to a subordinate. How truly unamerican some of you are.

I can understand the criticism from those of us whom have or currently are serving in the military. We understand the customs and courtesies traditions and standards when it comes to the salute, parade rest for NCO’s or attention for officers. I get it. But do remember folks that commander in chief is a title and not a declaration of military service. He is still a civilian. Don’t tell me you’ve never saluted some cherry LT fresh outta OCS and confused the h*ll out of him/her.
