I saw an F-111 pull this maneuver at night during a simulated strike on our Division HQ during maneuvers at Fort Hunter Liggett in California. VERY impressive! On pull-up from the strike he went into a vertical climb and "lit the tourch". Needless to say, an area of at least a klick in diameter was lit up like daylight. Great fun!

The FB-111 was the Air Force Strategic Bomber version. The Navy version was the F-111B. The FB-111A was built by General Dynamics in Fort Worth, TX. The F-111B was built by Grumman on Long Island, NY. Navy (F-111B) version was cancelled due to too heavy for carriers.

Worked on the F111D in the early 70's at CAFB. One plane had declared an emergency from imminent hydraulic failure and circled the field once to burn off fuel. It was not quite dark yet. Beautiful display and they landed safely.

I also worked the D model at Cannon in the mid 70's, Also worked the E model at upper Heyford (Avionics -comm,nav,ecm). Saw a slow speed flyover with lit fuel dump whole tdy to spain - AWESOME!!! The memories of my younger days.....

When Col Winston E. Moore brought the first FB-111A to Pease AFB in Nov 70 ... he did a dump and burn over the runway on a high speed pass. So is this one a privately owned Aardvark?

Grumman took what it learned on the 111 and came up with another swing-wing option ... the F-14 Tomcat (Anytime, Baby!) ... the prototype crashed at Calverton on final after a hydraulic emergency on fist test flight ... but turned out to be a pretty wicked acft! For a Squid-bird.

This was really awsome over the Takhli sky when the "swing wing thing" arrived in thailand.

Wonderful aircraft. They were the last aircraft that I worked on in the USAF. I still miss them, and the C-130. Both are great planes.

Would like to know when & where this was filmed. Must be older, very close to crowd. Worked on F-111Ds at Cannon AFB in late 70's. Cool aircraft. Twin afterburner takeoffs at night are neat to see too!

This is a RAAF F-111C during an airshow at Newcastle Williamtown Airport. The AF had banned this practice for our F-111's when I worked on them in 1983 but the RAAF continued the practice. Go Aussies

I seem to remember that upon completion of the largest payload drop during Brass Strike the 111s came to Myrtle Beach AFB asked to do a Dump and Burn did so and immediately declared emergency and landed 3 dead sticks after turning final. Good gliders too. Somewhere the slides from '71 still exist.
