WWII Pilots Awarded Medal
Week of July 13, 2009
President Barack Obama recently signed into law a bill that awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II. The WASP was established during World War II with the primary mission of flying noncombat military missions in the United States, thus freeing their male counterparts for combat missions overseas. For more information on the WASP, visit the National WASP WWII Museum website, the WASP Library Collection at Texas Woman's University, WASP on the Web, WASP--Remembered by Those Who Knew Them, the Public Broadcasting Service's (PBS') Fly Girls website, the WASP Killed in Service, and the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force WASP Fact Sheet.
