The American Legion is conducting a two-day Veterans Small Business Workshop in conjunction with the annual Washington Conference in Washington, D.C., Feb. 24-25. The workshop is free and specifically designed for service members, veterans and spouses who own businesses or are thinking about starting one

The two-day intensive entrepreneurship course was created by the Legion in partnership with local small businesses, such as Vets GSA LLC, the Millennium Group Int. and the DC VA Medical Center. After completing this free course, participants will have the tools and knowledge they need to identify a business opportunity, avoid common pitfalls and maximize their earning potential.

"This event represents the strength of the programs that the Legion can offer veterans." said Capt. Scott Davidson, principal consultant from Vets GSA. "Vets GSA has worked to provide the best in class for instructors so that the veteran business owners can not only learn, but thrive in the small business market. With today's ever-changing business landscape, these events are more important than ever so the veteran business owner is aware of the ever-changing requirements that may hinder business growth."

Joe Sharpe is the director of the Legion's National Veterans Employment and Education Division.

"Entrepreneurship is the answer for many veterans who find the job market a particularly tough one these days," Sharpe said. "That is one reason why, according to the SBA [Small Business Administration], veterans are more likely as non-veterans to start their own small businesses. We recognized how important it is that we assist and advocate on behalf of our veterans who are self-employed. This is why the American Legion is one of the few veterans service organizations that have invested extensively in tangible programs and services for veteran entrepreneurs."

The Legion Small Business Workshop will include multiple networking opportunities and a business luncheon, as well as a roundtable session hosted by the DC VA Medical Center, which will have contracting decision makers onsite to hear pitches from attendees in certain North American Industry Classification System codes.

Service members, veterans, spouses and any small businesses looking to partner with veteran-owned small businesses are welcome for this event.
